Finding & checking care

Name the medicine

# Check the medicine’s exact identity

Name, form, status, reason.

Copy the full product name into your notes. Ask how it will arrive and whether it is a finished drug from a maker or a medicine prepared to order.

## Keep the ingredient and the product together

Semaglutide products (Ozempic, Wegovy) with FDA approval were available as tablets and injections as of September 2026.

Ask which form is being discussed. A familiar name alone leaves that question open.

As of September 2026, tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound) also had FDA-approved injection products.

Terms behind the care check

**Ingredient**

The part of a medicine intended to do the work.

**FDA**

FDA is short for Food and Drug Administration, the US agency that reviews drug products.

## Ask what kind of product it is

Compounding means making a medicine to order, through a pharmacist, doctor or a maker listed with FDA.

Medicines prepared to order lacked FDA approval as of September 2026, including those with familiar ingredient names.

Ask the person writing the prescription to explain the reason for this product, its intended use and any difference from an approved finished drug.

Terms behind the care check

**Finished drug**

A ready-made drug product supplied by its manufacturer.

## Do not use a code as proof of approval

A National Drug Code (NDC) identifies a product in a government directory.

As of September 2026, FDA stated that an NDC listing did not mean a product had FDA approval.

FDA registration means listing a drug maker with the agency. As of September 2026, that listing was not approval of the maker or its medicines.

Ask for the actual approval record when a service claims approval. Keep that separate from a licence, registration or product code.

### Read the record

FDA explains why being listed with the agency does not mean a maker or medicine has been approved.
